Balance Transfer Credit Cards

Balance transfer credit cards offer the possibility of transferring your outstanding credit card balance from a high interest credit card to a lower interest rate or even a 0% interest rate. These balance transfer card offers save you money on interest payments, help you consolidate your debt and lower your monthly debt payments.

What to look for in balance transfer credit card offers?

To find the answers to these questions it will be helpful to go to the "terms and conditions" on the balance transfer credit card application of your choice. If you have good credit it should be possible to find a balance transfer credit card with a year or longer 0% introductory rate and with no balance transfer fees. In some cases a low apr on balance transfers will last until the initial transfer amount is fully paid off.

Comparing and Choosing the Best Balance Transfer Credit Cards

Your goal is to transfer your credit card debt from a higher interest credit card to a lower interest credit card or to consolidate and transfer all your credit debt onto one low interest credit card.  These are some of the issues you need to consider when you are comparing balance transfer credit card offers whether you are considering a low interest card or a card with a 0% introductory offer. All of this information can be found in the "terms and conditions" section of the credit card application contract.

  1. Is the low interest rate an introductory rate that will only last for a short amount of time or will it apply to the full life of the transfer until the initial transfer amount has been fully paid off.
  2. Once the introductory period is over what is the regular ongoing interest rate you will be charged.
  3. If this is a credit card you will also be adding new purchases to, then be sure the low APR interest credit rate or 0% introductory APR interest rate is also applied to new spending.
  4. If the credit card allows for low interest or a 0% introductory offers on both transfers and new spending, are these offers applicable for the same amount of time, for example a 0% introductory offer may apply to balance transfers for 12 months and new purchases for only 6 months.
  5. Find out if there are certain things that may trigger a higher interest rate such as a late payment or a required minimum payment.
  6. Are there additional fees involved in the balance transfer credit cards you are considering? There may be yearly maintenance fees, flat fees or percentage fees (1% to 3% usually) charged for moving a balance from one credit card to another.
  7. Make the transfers within the transfer time period allowed by the bank or there may be additional fees.
  8. Look to see if there is a limit to the number of balances that can be transferred from other cards.

If you have a large debt and don’t think you’ll be able to pay it off before the end of the 0% introductory offer period, you’ll probably be better off going for a low "life of the balance" credit card instead.

If you continually move your credit card debt from one 0% interest credit card to another in order to avoid paying any interest on your debt it may spoil your credit score. The best advice for improving your credit rating is to stick with one balance transfer credit card or low interest credit card and pay off the balance gradually each month without making any late payments until the debt balance is fully paid off.
