Choosing an Air Miles Credit Card

Additional criteria to take into account when evaluating which air miles credit card will work best for your travel needs. This information can be found in the application contract or the terms and conditions section of the credit card application.

  1. If you plan to carry a large balance on your credit card then choose a card with a low APR interest rate. Otherwise your interest rate charges may outweigh the benefits of the card.
  2. Look to see if there is a yearly maintenance fee on the card and evaluate if the benefits outweigh the charges.
  3. Consider which airlines the air miles can be applied to and if they are airlines you are likely to use. Some credit card air miles programs benefit domestic travel in certain regions of the country or certain airports and some are better for international travel.
  4. Find out if black out dates apply and how the black out dates are applied.
  5. Look to see if there are extra air miles credits or bonus programs offered or if there are free companion airline ticket programs offered.  Review the terms under which extra air miles are added, such as spending a certain amount each year.
  6. Evaluate if the same rules apply to the companion ticket as for the primary purchased ticket. For example black out dates may apply to the free companion ticket but not to the purchased ticket.
  7. Note how many air miles are earned for each dollar spent and if there is a limit on the number air miles that can be earned in a year.
  8. If you are already part of the frequent flyer of an airlines, see if the air miles you will accumulate can be added to your current frequent flyer program
  9. Consider if the air miles expire after a certain number of years if they have not been used. Some air miles programs allow you to transfer your air miles into frequent flyer programs of various airlines. In this way you can usually accumulate benefits more quickly without having to wait to spend $20,000 or $30,000.
  10. Find out how many air miles are required for a domestic flight and how many for an international flight.
  11.  If you travel internationally look to see if the credit card company adds a 2-3% interest charge on all charges made in foreign currencies.
  12. Consider whether or not the air miles can be converted into points to be used for other types of rewards offers such as hotels, cruises or other types of merchandise.
